FORMER Newport Gwent Dragons forward Hoani MacDonald is in an induced coma after suffering a suspected heart attack when playing in his native New Zealand.

The 34-year-old collapsed while playing for Southland in their ITM Cup semi-final against Counties Manukau. His club report that that the lock/back row forward is in a stable condition.

MacDonald made a great impact when he joined the Dragons from the Highlanders in 2008 and went on to make 40 appearances for the region over two seasons.

The 6 ft 5in forward, who represented New Zealand Maori, joined Melbourne Rebels when his Rodney Parade contract expired.
