Hayley meeting abandoned

10:55am Monday 14th April 2008

NEWPORT Wasps, under their new sponsorship name of Clements Construction Wasps, had little luck yesterday when their home British Premier League speedway meeting with Birmingham Brummies was abandoned after the completion of only one of the scheduled 15 heats.

Persistent rain had made the Hayley Stadium track very wet and after visiting reserve riders Jack Hargreaves and Lee Smart had both fallen during the unfinished heat two, match referee Christine Turnbill announced the meeting was called off because there was too much water on the track with the score standing at 4-2 to the visitors.

Former Wasp Chris Schramm, guesting from Elite League outfit Ipswich Witches, won the afternoon's only race ahead of home rider Paul Clews and team-mate Mark Burrows, guesting from Stoke Potters.

No new date has yet been announced for the meeting with the Wasps next in scheduled action on Sunday, when they entertain Redcar Bears in a BPL match-up.
