Wasps wait over meeting

NEWPORT Wasps officials are waiting to discover whether they can postpone Sunday's home British Premier League meeting against Berwick Bandits, following the death of owner and promoter Tim Stone.

Sunday's KO Cup clash with Rye House Rockets was called off after Stone, 55, died at the city's Royal Gwent Hospital of a suspected heart attack on Saturday while visiting his gravely ill mother, Marion Wood, who passed away in the early hours of yesterday.

At an impromptu public meeting at Wasps' Hayley Stadium home on Sunday, a five-strong committee consisting of skipper Tony Atkin, track manager Peter Brook, start marshall Ken Petherick, clerk of the course Brian Woodward and club administrator Jayne Morris was formed.

While the committee is hopeful speedway will eventually continue at the venue following a short break, meetings cannot currently take place because Stone was the sole licence holder.

However, the scheduled Dragon Amateur Speedway meeting on Monday, May 5, is to go ahead because a full licence is not required for that particular event to be run, start 11am.

Wasps' officials are inviting fans to Hayley Stadium on Sunday for a social gathering in tribute to Tim Stone beginning at 3pm.
