Fifteen years ago, Newport’s now famous medieval ship was found buried deep in the banks of the River Usk. Now a new deli-style café has opened on the banks of the Usk.

Monusk Deli, in Millennium House, has a menu inspired by the cuisine of from San Sebastian, and is the brain child of Finn and Lola.

“The Monusk was built in 1447,” said Finn.

“Archaeologists have traced the timber that was used in building the vessel back within a 20-mile radius of San Sebastian, which is why our menu is inspired by the region.”

Finn wants to showcase the produce from the ship’s trade route which would have taken it through Portugal, Spain and Northern France before it joined the Bristol Channel. Sitting food from these regions alongside some of Wales’ best produce the duo feel that Monusk brings the city something new and exciting.

The menu is full of pintxos dishes, similar to tapas. There is a strong focus on organic goods, with a good selection for vegans and vegetarians as well as a wide range of characuterie. The wine and cider list reflects the richness of the areas that the menu is built around, with beer from local breweries and a Rioja from LaMancha.

Serving food from 10am until early evening Monusk is swiftly becoming Newport’s coolest food and drink destination, where you can enjoy three pintxos dishes for £5. Working with Barnabus Arts House and the Newport Ship Museum, Monusk will also have photography shows and art displays.

Monusk is a short walk from Friars Walk at Millennium Plaza. To get there, just take a walk over the millennium bridge.
