Tredegar-based Atal UK, specialists in structural waterproofing across the whole of the UK, has scooped the SME of the Year Award in the first Blaenau Gwent Business Awards.

The ceremony was held at the General Offices, Ebbw Vale and was attended by Cabinet Secretary Ken Skates AM and Blaenau Gwent AM Alun Davies.

Atal has been trading for just over five years from Tafarnaubach Industrial Estate, providing structural waterproofing and ground gas protection requirements for a range of partners, from architects, contractors such as Midas and Keir, and developers such as Taylor Wimpey and Barrett Homes, to installers throughout the country.

Atal founder and managing director Dai Rees said: “We are a relatively new company, and up against some big names for the award, so we’re really proud to be the very first SME of the Year in awards that we hope will lift the prestige of industry in our area. We’re an ambitious company, but very committed to our roots in Blaenau Gwent.”

Atal is Welsh for protect, and the company employs 30 local people at its Heads of the Valleys HQ.

It has been involved in protecting the properties of some big names, including celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and fashion designer Wayne Hemingway.
