The final preparations are being put in place for the 28th staging of an eagerly-awaited annual golf day which has raised more than £300,000 for charity over the years.

Organiser, South Wales businessman Roger Gambarini, has raised £301,450 for St David’s Hospice Care over the years by staging the golf event.

He will hold the 2018 event at the Roman Road course at Celtic Manor on Thursday, October 4.

Roger Gambarini, who was Celtic Manor’s Twenty Ten Club Captain for 2015 and is consultant with South Wales-based Office Visions Ltd, said: “It’s been a fantastic honour and privilege for me to be able to stage our annual charity golf day at the Roman Road course at Celtic Manor. It’s a beautiful setting and allows us to have great support and to raise a considerable amount for St David’s Hospice Care.”

“I originally set a target of raising £0.25m for St David’s Hospice Care, which we have long passed, which perhaps makes all the effort of Julie and I worthwhile.”

Roger, who staged his first golf day in 1991 when £3,500 was raised, has a special reason for supporting the Newport-based charity.

He said: “My brother did a lot of fundraising for St David’s Hospice Care, which is why I initially began organising the golf day. However, when my father was ill in 1992, he was looked after by the nurses from St David’s Hospice, who were fantastic.

“The golf day has been my way of supporting the charity that supported my family at a very difficult time. The golf charity fund raiser has grown in stature to such an extent over the years and is now so popular that people look forward to being involved every year.”

Last year a record £14,250 was raised during the event.

Among those businesses which have taken part and remained with Roger every stroke of the way are Davlan, MDW Haulage, Nuaire, Harding Evans Solicitors, Acorn Recruitment, R E Phillips and Partners, SRK, Hazell’s Haulage and Whitehead Building Services.

Emma Saysell, chief executive of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “Roger and the team at Office Visions have provided wonderful support to St David’s Hospice Care over very many years.

"We know, from our own experiences, how difficult it is to organise fundraising events. To keep his golf days going into the 28th year is a truly amazing and commendable achievement and one for which we are all extremely grateful.

“Roger is a wonderful supporter of the charity and the money he has helped to raise through the staging of his wonderful golf days over the past 27 years and heading into the 28th, is truly remarkable.”
