A CHEF who worked in a restaurant boasting not one - but two - Michelin stars, has launched his own business amid the pandemic.

Lee Rogers, who has been a chef for more than 30 years and worked under Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons in Oxford but has spent the last 12 years working functions and events in and around Cardiff, has used lockdown to set-up his own business: The Classic Cheesecake Guy.

The father-of-two said: “Coronavirus has had a huge impact on the industry I love; it’s been really hard.

“Last year I was at home looking after and home schooling our kids while my wife, Rachel, who works in social care became busier than ever. We joined the ‘juggle struggle’ like everyone else."

During the first lockdown Mr Rogers made treats for friends and neighbours - delivered to their doorsteps - to help lift spirits, but as 2021 loomed the couple were concerned about the impact of further lockdowns on the hospitality sector.

“We decided to put my skills to good use,” said the 46-year-old.

“We used to host a lot at home and my cheesecakes were always a hit, so that’s what we settled on.”

On January 1 (2021) Rachel set up and Instagram and Facebook page @theclassiccheesecakeguy which has kept Mr Rogers "really busy" making daily custom orders.

“It’s been amazing,” added Mr Rogers.

“Our orders vary, from people looking for a little pick me up to celebrations orders. So far it’s been nothing but positive – giving me something to focus on at such an uncertain time.

“I don’t think I would have ever considered starting a small business before the pandemic, but I’m so glad that we have.

“There’s something very special about starting something up from scratch and watching it grow, especially at a time of such worry for so many.”

Rather than offering a ‘set menu’ the business offers a personal, bespoke service, with customers choosing and designing their ‘dream cheesecakes’ by sharing their vision with Lee or Rachel.

Contactless delivery is available in Newport, Risca and parts of Cwmbran.

Alternatively, customers can collect their sweet treats in a Covid secure way.

Generally Mr Rogers only needs a few days notice for a creation but - if it's for a special occasion - it's recommended that customers give "as much notice as possible" to avoid disappointment.
