A POP-UP restaurant, party in the castle and masterclasses from some of the UK’s top chefs are among the highlights of this year’s Abergavenny Food Festival.

The event, now in its 14th year, promises to deliver a host of culinary treats for some 35,000 visitors who are expected to flock to the town on Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors can browse more than 200 food stalls or watch demonstrations by world-famous TV chef Valentine Warner, food anthropologist Claudia Roden and restaurant owners Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi.

The main festival markets take place at Lion Street, Market Hall, Brewery Yard, St Mary’s Priory Centre, Abergavenny Castle and in St John’s Square featuring delicacies ranging from Italian olive oil to fresh chillies and Monmouthshire honey.

Youngsters should head to Abergavenny Castle which hosts the children’s academy and cookery competitions.

Among the highlights are a masterclass from Fuchsia Dunlop on Chinese home cooking in the Priory Centre on Saturday. Then on Sunday Claudia Roden will talk about the dishes in her latest book The Food of Spain at the Borough Theatre, followed by The Fabulous Baker Brothers, Tom and Henry Herbert, fifth generation bakers, who will share breadmaking tips.

This year’s debate focuses on Do We Still Need the High Street?

Chaired by BBC Wales presenter Sarah Dickens, it features a panel of guests that includes Tom Herbert and takes place in the Market Hall at 6pm on Saturday.
