Happy birthday for tomorrow David Beckham!
The dashing footballer is still turning heads as he reaches his 40th birthday on May 2 and to show our appreciation for the fact he ages like fine wine, here are 40 pictures of David’s style evolution throughout the years.
1. The windswept and fresh-faced
David as an eager young footballer back in 1993.
2. The heavy-on-the-hair gel
Ah, the 90s – a time for throwing any amount of gel in your hair and hoping for the best…
3. The square glasses
Looking more like the class nerd than a star footballer back in 1997 – the mint green suit doesn’t help either.
4. The bouffant
We suspect a fair bit of mousse and blow-drying was needed to get this much body and bounce to his golden hair.
5. The two-tone
Blond or black? David couldn’t make up his mind and just went for both.
6. The Brylcreem
David loved the slicked-back hair look so much he advertised Brylcreem during a photo shoot in 1997.
7. The curtains
It’s hard to imagine that this was ever a trend but many got swept up in this look and were (wrongly) told it was a good way of framing your face.
8. The peroxide curtains
David wasn’t ready to give up on the curtains look and hoped dying it blond would help. It didn’t.
9. The skullcap
We all remember it but we’ve never understood the thinking behind it.
10. The ‘we can’t work out what this was supposed to be’
Part Mohawk and part shaven, either the razor slipped or he couldn’t decide between the two looks but it’s certainly a unique hybrid.
11. The beach babe
Those silky blond locks look great as he strolls along the beach in Brazil in 2000.
12. The baby Mohawk
A tiny, barely-there hair rebellion.
13. The bigger Mohawk
It’s bigger but it’s definitely not better.
14. The horn
Sometimes all you need is a pointy tuft of hair and nothing else.
15. The Sonic the hedgehog
Anyone else see the resemblance?
16. The umm… this?
An odd disconnect between facial hair and head hair.
17. The porcupine
Luckily he has learned how to flatten and tame his hair by now.
18. The smoulder
Look how sexy this pose is, despite the fact he has clearly stolen his glasses off someone from The Matrix.
19. The bandage/beanie
At first glance it looks like the footballer has had a nasty head injury on the pitch. On further inspection it appears to be a fashion choice, which is also concerning.
20. The hair band
Embracing his feminine side with this pretty accessory.
21. The cockatoo
David making bedhead look sexy.
22. The feeble beard
Not sure if the odd rectangle of facial hair counts as a beard, but it was certainly an interesting choice.
23. The shaven eyebrow
Channelling his inner Vanilla Ice with these eyebrows.
24. The cornrows
David taming his mane with this “on holiday” style.
25. The double ponytail
Why stick to one ponytail when you can have two?
26. The middle parting
This level of parting precision takes dedication.
27. The double horn
Part-quiff, part Mohawk with a hole in the middle and part stegosaurus.
28. The messy bun
Championing the messy up-do for men way before hipsters turned it into a craze.
29. The peroxide buzzcut
David copying another rapper, this time he’s gone for Eminem.
30. The knitted beanie
Borrowing accessories from your wife is one of the highlights of married life.
31. The peroxide crop
Aww, matching with Victoria for a cute couples look.
32. The adorably proud father
There are plenty of sweet photos of David being a great father and proudly showing off his brood, but this one tops our list as he gets a kiss from Cruz during a baseball game.
33. The awkward bob
Bobs are so tricky to grow out and this is David stuck in that awkward in-between stage.
34. The top knot
Always one step ahead of hipster trends with this stylish top knot.
35. The mini-me
David and his son had matching quiffs with short sides at a basketball game.
36. The action man
He’s got the smile, wave and walk routine down to a T after all these years.
37. The slime
Duck! Gooey slime ruins David’s red carpet style at the Kid’s Choice Sports Awards last year.
38. The beard
David has ditched the patchy goatee of the past and gone for a more groomed look.
39. Approaching perfection
David had got all his style experimentation and rebellion out of the way and he was on the right track to reaching his true style potential last year.
40. The winner
And he’s done it! After finally settling on a style we hope this one is here to stay because he’s never looked so good- turning 40 clearly suits him.
