When and how did Trichotomy come together?

We formed back in 1999 while we were studying our music undergrad at the conservatorium in Brisbane, Australia. I think we formed because we had played together in an ensemble together and enjoyed it. We had a different bass player then, and Pat came on board in 2006.

Fact Finding Mission pulls in a variety of influences including elements from the European and Indian folk traditions. What inspired you to take this route when producing the album?

We really set about exploring some different sounds harmonically on this album, and wanted to work with some special guests.

These guests helped us write in new ways and in a sense directed the sound of those tracks. It’s important to us that each album is different to the last and challenges us as players and composers.

The jazz world recently lost Dave Brubeck. Was he an inspiration to you at all?

Yes, I definitely admire his rhythmic concepts and clarity of playing. As a composer, Absolutely!

Fact Finding Mission Has some soundbites which are unusual for a jazz recording can you tell us a bit more about them?

There are a few well known special guests on the album. They are assisting us on our Fact Finding Mission I can’t say any more – I don’t want to give t away.

You are about to embark on a UK tour are you looking forward to it?

Indeed, we playing in some fun towns at excellent venues. Plus, we didn’t tour in 2012, so we’ re overdue for a visit. Always good to escape the Australian summer we say!

You’ve drawn in several collaborations on this album, do you enjoy working with other artists?

We love collaborating with various artists. It’s nice to push yourself in different directions.

What can people expect from your concerts?

Lots of music off the albumof course! Dynamic, rhythmic, melody driven music with a real sense of group creation. It’s a lot of fun.
