NEWPORT City Council (NCC) are hosting a 'Tomorrow's Democracy' event, following Newport's first ever Chartist festival.

The conference will be at Riverfront Theatre, on November 5, following Newport Rising Festival, which is between November 2 and November 4, and celebrates Newport’s Chartist heritage.

'Tomorrow's Democracy' will bring those events up-to-date through a series of debates looking at how democracy works in the modern world.

The event, between 08.45am and 5pm, will explore the changing picture of modern politics and representation and how the traditional view of democracy is being challenged through new technologies and shifting public attitudes.

Speakers on the day include: Leader of NCC Cllr Debbie Wilcox; Chief Executive of RSA Matthew Taylor; political commentator Paul Mason; Policy Institute Director at King's College in London Bobby Duffy; and Minister for the Constitution MP Chloe Smith.

The conference is being held as part of the council’s corporate plan commitments to develop an exciting programme of local events, raising the profile of Newport on the national stage, and hopefully encouraging more visitors and investors into the city.
