VEOLIA looks all but out of the running for a multi-million project to burn waste from five Gwent authorities at Llanwern Steelworks.
Prosiect Gwyrdd has announced that it recommends that Viridor, which is is building an incinerator in Cardiff, is the preferred bidder for the scheme.
The decision has to be ratified by the five authorities, including Newport, Monmouthshire and Caerphilly, that are behind the non-recyclable waste plan.
If it goes ahead it will mean that thousands of tonnes of waste from the three Gwent authorities will be burned in Cardiff rather than buried.
