POLICE are investigating a fire at TJ’s, the former nightclub on Clarence Place, which is suspected to have been deliberately started in the early hours of this morning.
Fire crews from Maindee, Malpas, Duffryn and Cwmbran all attended the fire at 2.08am on Saturday morning.
The fire is believed to have been started on the third floor of the three-storey building.
Fire crews tackled the blaze using 10 breathing apparatus kits, a hydraulic platform and thermal imaging cameras.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries.
The fire crews extinguished the fire at around 3.53am this morning.
TJ’s closed in 2010, shortly after the death of owner John Sicolo, who ran the club for more than 40 years.
Acts which played at the legendary venue over the years included Manic Street Preachers, Primal Scream, Oasis, Green Day and Catatonia.
Officers from Gwent Police are investigating the incident. If you have any information, call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
