A MAN from Spain enjoyed his charity date with Enzo Calzaghe on Monday after placing the highest bid in an online auction.

Ross Mackintosh, 30, saw the auction that was being run by the owner of Ty Coffee in Oakdale, near Blackwood, Alex Jones, via Twitter on the last day and didn’t hesitate in placing a bid.

He describes himself as a huge fan of Enzo, having seen his son, Joe, fight on numerous occasions, and has even travelled as far as Vegas to watch him.

Mr Mackintosh, who is originally from Barry, but now lives in Seville, flew back for the meal, after placing the winning bid of £150.

He and his fiancée, Nia Williams, met Mr Calzaghe, who brought along his brother, Sergio, at The Celtic Manor Resort.

Mr Mackintosh said: “Enzo was a complete gentleman and one of the funniest guys I’ve ever met. I was in my element getting the chance to chat boxing and life in general with the most successful British trainer of all time.

“I had just read his book, A Fighting Life, one of my all-time favourites. The food was great and the company was even better.”

Ms Jones came up with the win-a-date concept to raise money for Mencap UK.
