A CAERLEON photographer has won an amateur camera club competition for his “outstanding” work with digital images.

Allan Mason-Jones, who is a research associate with a PhD in mechanical engineering by day, produced what international photographer and judge Phil Ray described as a highly creative image of a deckchair on a beach, which appeared to be moving.

Mr Mason-Jones’ work, entitled When No-one Looks, was taken at dawn in Swanage, Dorset, with a Canon D50 camera and digitally manipulated.

It was up against 49 other images in the monthly Cardiff Camera Club competition, including black and white, colour and digital images, portraits, landscapes, street photography and architecture.

Mr Mason-Jones, of Boddington Terrace, was featured in the Argus in 2011 when he was declared a joint winner of a competition held for new members of the club.

The father of two said of his win: “It is always nice to win but I never expect it, especially with ones which are digitally manipulated like this, they don’t tend to be liked by judges.

“I was surprised that this one did well.”

Two pieces of Mr Mason-Jones’ work have been accepted into exhibitions by the Royal Photographic Society, of which he is also a member.

Commenting on When No-one Looks, judge Phil Ray said: “I love the surreal quality of this photograph and the extra dimension of movement it seems to have. You have the illusion of hearing it fluttering in the wind.”
