IT’S a far cry from the luxury it once was, but this 20th century swimming pool and the land that surrounds it could be yours for £180,000.

The now derelict pool was once the pride and joy of the residents of Gaer’s Stelvio House built in the early 1900s.

But it fell into decline and lay undiscovered for several years after the house was demolished some years ago, and became overgrown with weeds and debris.

The house was eventually replaced with a modern residential block and part of the former Stelvio garden was restored.

But the remainder, which houses the swimming pool and adjourning land was left neglected, full of rubbish and with a major infestation of Japanese Knotweed, which is known to damage concrete foundations and buildings.

Complaints were made by neighbours about vandalism, tipping and other unsocial behaviour on the site.

In 2011 William Jones applied for planning permission to demolish three prefabricated garage buildings on the land to make way for four apartments.

A report submitted to the council at the time said there was no prospect for the site to be restored to its original purpose because it would be “wholly unviable”.

It said because of the neglect, decay and prohibitive cost required to reinstate the swimming pool, combined with its lack of demand, the only practical solution was to develop.

But the application, which was later passed, suggested the pool would be maintained as a sunken garden area for residents.

The 8,000 square foot site lies within the Stow Park Circle Conservation Area and is accessed via Stelvio Park Avenue.

It has now been tidied and cleared of rubbish and is being marketed by Davies and Sons Estate Agents with a guide price of £180,000.

The firm says the seller is “open to offers” and plans for the apartments can be viewed at its offices.
