A FORMER care home boss who falsified the insulin records of a vulnerable diabetes patient was banned from taking up managerial posts for two years.

Gillian Shaw added the names of colleagues on a medication chart to make it look as though the unnamed patient was given the life-saving drug at Llanyravon Court Care Home in Cwmbran. The Llanfrechfa Way home was under investigation at the time because a domestic worker, as opposed to a nurse, had administered the drug to the immobile man.

Mrs Shawfaced being struck off by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) yesterday but was instead given a conditions of practice order after it emerged the patient was given his insulin shots, though her colleagues failed to keep accurate records.

Mrs Shaw altered the medical records while the investigators waited in her office in what her barrister, Chris Howells, described as “a moment of madness”.

She admitted acting dishonestly by writing her colleagues’ initials on the medication chart and requesting that another nurse, Berly Thomas, sign it in 2011.

Mrs Shaw was subsequently sacked by her employers for gross misconduct. But a panel convened in Cardiff ruled yesterday she should not be struck off as the man was not harmed, her actions were out of character and she was otherwise an “excellent nurse”.

Panel chairwoman Emma Boothroyd said: “You have shown remorse.”

The order means she must not take up managerial responsibilities directly or indirectly for the next two years.

She must also inform her new employer, Stow Park Nursing Home in Stow Park Avenue, Newport, where she works as a staff nurse, of the order within the next two weeks.

Mrs Shaw must also declare the conditions of the order to new employers, as well as agencies and educational bodies.

Mrs Shawadmitted two charges of retrospectively altering the medical chart of the unnamed patient A to make it appear that insulin had been safely administered on June 28 and June 29, 2011, a charge of dishonesty in respect of the two altered records, requesting nurse Thomas complete the chart of patientAfor the dates of June 30 and July 20, 2011, and that the request made of Nurse Thomas was dishonest.
