A NEWPORT hospice has unveiled an artwork created by patients.

Patients of St David’s Hospice Care, in Blackett Avenue, Newport, were invited to take part in an arts project, set up with a £5,000 award from Big Lottery Fund – Grab a Grant, in association with the Argus.

The money meant patients were able to take part in a number of therapeutic sessions, focusing on art and health, where they created a mosaic sculpture.

It was unveiled on April 16 by the mayor of Newport, John Guy, and Stephanie Roberts, a Newport mosaic artist, at the hospice’s day centre in Malpas. The work, designed by the hospice’s Creative Living Group, helped by Stephanie Roberts, will be displayed in its gardens.

Angela Canellas, St David’s Hospice care complementary therapy and day hospice manager, said the Creative Living Group had gone from strength to strength since winning support from the Grab a Grant fund last year.

She said: “The Creative Living Group has been an inspiration for many of our patients who have found that they can do things that they didn’t otherwise believe they were able to do. “The group, which is made up of around a dozen of our patients, has allowed people from all backgrounds and abilities to gain positive new experiences alongside people who are experiencing similar medical conditions to themselves and to gain peer support.

“ It’s been a real success story.”
