A HEROIN-using couple were jailed for a total of 25 years today after breaking into the home of two Newport doctors, tying them up and beating them before making off with a BMW, cash, and thousands of pounds worth of jewellery.

Edward Donovan, 51, of Windmill Square, Commercial Road, Newport, was jailed for 15 years at Cardiff Crown Court today.

Rhiannon Gibbons, 27, of Chepstow Road, Newport, was jailed for ten years.

Both were found guilty of two counts of robbery, wounding Dr Prana Das with intent and assaulting Dr Nishebita Das occasioning actual bodily harm.

They had denied the charges.

Dr Prana Das was beaten with a hammer during the raid on his home and left suffering from bleeding on the brain - an injury so severe he is unlikely to recover.

Prior to the attack, Dr Prana Das had been facing a string of charges relating to alleged fraud and neglect at care homes managed by his company Puretruce Health Care Ltd.

A seven-year, £11.6m police operation amounted to nothing last month when the case against Dr Prana Das and his co-accused was ordered to lie on file because of the injuries inflicted on Dr Das and the likelihood he will never be fit to stand trial.
