Last week’s Now and Then picture was of Station Approach, Caerleon. It seems no one recognised it as we received no replies.
Caerleon railway station was a former station serving Caerleon on the east side of Newport. It was opened on the Pontypool, Caerleon and Newport Railway line in 1878 after the PC&N had already been absorbed into the Great Western Railway. It was closed to passengers on April 30, 1962 and closed to all traffic on November 29, 1965.
Trains were used for local journeys as well as for travelling further afield. Business people popped into Newport and pupils also travelled to West Mon, County School for Girls and Abersychan Grammar School by train.
Last year a new train station at Caerleon and improvements to existing stations at Abergavenny, Pontypool and New Inn and Cwmbran were among the proposals up for public consultation.
