EYEWITNESSES say a runaway car rolled 30 metres down a hill and pinned a woman to a garden wall.

The woman suffered non life-threatening leg injuries in the collision in Almond Avenue, Risca, which happened at about 5.35pm.

Eye witnesses said the parked Volkswagen Golf rolled down the hill behind the woman as she walked to a house nearby. The handbrake was still on and in position after the collision, they said.

The woman was pinned to the wall for around ten minutes before emergency services, including two fire engines from Malpas and Risca, two police cars and a rapid response vehicle, got there.

Neighbours Danielle Thomas, 24, and her mum Keren Thomas, 52, ran from their house to help when they heard the woman's "desperate screams".

Men from the street rushed to help push the car off her after being given the go-ahead by police.

Mrs Thomas said: "She was in absolute agony and distress."

Her daughter called it a "horrid freak accident".

The woman was taken to Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital with leg injuries. The driver of the car was spoken to by police but not arrested, and the car was recovered and taken for tests.
