A CALDICOT woman and 65 of her friends raised more than £2,100 for charity when they ran the Cwmbran Race for Life on Sunday.

Laura Cox, 47, and her team called ‘Cox’s Barmy Army’, were among more than 2,000 women to complete the five-kilometre event at Northfields Recreation Ground.

Mrs Cox, who has undergone two and a half years of chemotherapy treatment, using Eribulin, and has to spend more than £3,000 to maintain her treatment, which is not available on NHS Wales.

The team, who range in age from three-years-old to 60, and included Mrs Cox's friend Zoe Saint raised £2,116 for Cancer Research UK.

Ms Saint, is Group CSI Co-ordinator for Wessex Garages at Newport Retail Park, which sponsored the team, said: "We ran the Race for Life for our mate Laura and in her honour we called our team Cox’s Barmy Army. We’re all really pleased to have raised £2,116 and are grateful to everyone who supported us."

She added: "We would also like to thank Wessex Garages. The company provided us all with pink t-shirts so we were easy to spot when running round the course."

The Race For Life is Cancer Research UK’s flagship event held at venues around the UK.

Lisa Sweeting, for Cancer Research UK, said: "Over 2,200 ladies joined together for one cause at Cwmbran Race for Life yesterday, ‘to beat cancer’”.

"Between them we are hoping that they will raise over £100,000 helping to ensure that Cancer Research UK can continue its life saving research."
