SHE may only be eight, but Nantyglo golf sensation Adelaide Francis taught Blaenau Gwent AM Alun Davies a thing or two on the golf course.

The talented youngster put Mr Davies through his paces at West Mon Golf Club, Nantyglo on Monday, before talking over her plans to play in the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in California later this month.

Adelaide needs to raise £4,500 to pay for the trip, the latest in a string of round the world competitions the schoolgirl has been invited to play in.

Addie, as she is affectionately called by her parents Tracey and Tom Francis, has been playing since she first picked up a club aged four, under the tuition of Alice Springs Golf Club pro James Morgan.

She has played all over the country and recently come back from a trip to Marbella, but this latest trip is very expensive and her parents struggling to keep up.

“Going to America is such a great opportunity for her, other children from different parts of the UK have received funding locally, but she has received nothing.

“We are told she is very talented, but as long as she is enjoying it, we’ll keep supporting her.”

Alun Davies AM met Addie to pledge his support for the rising star and encourage people to help send her to San Diego for the tournament on July 10.

“For someone to excel in such a skilled and competitive sport at such a young age is remarkable,” said Mr Davies.

“We need to nurture young talent and do all we can you support people like Addie.”

Malcolm Lewis of West Mon Golf Club said: “If anyone can give Addie the financial support she needs, please get in touch.”
