If you had to be stuck in a lift with someone, who would it be and why?

Neil Kinnock as he is one of the most honest people I have ever met and possibly the best prime minister Britain never had.

Rats – total phobia.

None. Life happens and you make your own luck, good or bad.

If you could have only one song on your iPod, what would it be and why?

Choice of two: The River, by Bruce Springsteen – brilliant lyrics that take me to another place and remind me of my own upbringing and youth – or Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me, the duet sung live by George Michael and Elton John – again, great lyrics and the live performance is stunning with a great crowd reaction.

What is the most expensive thing you’ve bought, not including property?

A horse – bought it, sold it, and bought it back again because it was being treated cruelly. I’m a big softy really.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

“Youth’s a mask, and it don’t last.

Live it long and live it fast,” – Rod Stewart.

Italian red wine, and a good book to accompany it.

Italian red wine (and my reading glasses).

Being able to read without glasses.

Where are you next going on holiday?

Sardinia.
