RIDERS are still wanted to tackle the Iron Mountain Sportif in Abergavenny’s Festival of Cycling.

The charity rides form part of the action on the Saturday of the annual festival, which kicks-off on Tuesday.

There are three rides; a 25 mile family leisure route, a 50 mile ride described by the organisers as “tough”, while the bravest or perhaps maddest will tackle the “epic” 100 mile Iron Mountain Route, including a climb of the infamous Tumble mountain.

The rides are all for a good cause too, with money raised going to the North Gwent Cardiac Rehabilitation & Aftercare charity.

The charity raises money for the cardiac rehabilitation programme in the area served by Nevill Hall Hospital.

That includes things like promoting community classes, assisting and promoting research and providing community support for palliative care for patients with heart failure.

Legendary cycling coach, Team GB’s Shane Sutton, one of the masterminds between last Summer’s Olympic cycling success will be among those taking on the challenge, before he gives a talk at the fringe event in the Angel Hotel later that evening, as well as cycling commentator Hugh Porter.

Festival organiser, Bill Owen, said: “Why not make this the year you do something really special and challenge yourself to ride one of the distances of the sportive which is open to all abilities.

“Join Hugh for the 20 mile leisure route or accompany Shane in the epic 100 mile ride.

“Shane and Hugh are two of the biggest names in cycling and it is great that they have decided to have a go in the sportif this year.”
