A WELSH think tank has called on the UK Government to devolve stamp duty to Wales to make the Assembly more financially accountable.
The UK's Changing Union project renewed its call for the devolution of stamp duty ahead of the closing date of the UK Government's consultation on whether to press ahead with devolving the tax.
Project chairman Professor Richard Wyn Jones said: "UK Government ministers have time and time again called for the Wales’s devolved institutions to be made more financially accountable. Devolving Stamp Duty to Wales would help achieve exactly that.
“Indeed, it’s difficult to think of a tax that is more suitable for devolution than Stamp Duty. By its very nature, it’s a tax that does not lend itself to cross-border evasion. It’s readily understandable to the public. It also links directly to the Assembly’s current responsibilities.”
The UK’s Changing Union project is a joint initiative between the Wales Governance Centre at Cardiff University, the Institute for Welsh Affairs and Tomorrow’s Wales.
