NEWPORT'S oldest shopper will be returning to his favourite supermarket to launch their new clothing line.

John Donovan, 106, will be returning to Newport Sainsbury's on Thursday September 12 for the launch of TU clothing, which will be TU live your style.

Mr Donovan, who was born on August 19, 1907, celebrated his 106th birthday at Glynanwen home, making him one of Britain's oldest men.

Despite his age Mr Donovan still shops in Newport Sainsbury’s every week accompanied by his daughter Susan Ireland.

Mr Donavan is the stores oldest customer and so he was invited by staff to the customer restaurant, where he eats regularly, and was provided with a free meal.

Mr Donovan served in the RAF, being stationed in Burma and India during the Second World War, before returning to Newport to work as a bus driver and latterly at what was the National and Westminster bank until he retired at 70.

Prior to that he had been both a conductor and driver of Newport’s trams, where he met his late wife Patricia.

Sainsbury’s has invested seven million pounds in re-branding Tu clothing and Mr Donovan will be cutting the ribbon on the re launch this month, along with the supermarkets youngest colleague.

On the day the supermarket will provide Mr. Donavan with a complete outfit from the new range of menswear.

“I do a lot of reading and a lot of sleeping but I go to Sainsbury’s once a week," Mr Donovan said.

“When go with my daughter, I am in charge of the trolley and she helps me to fill it, and she puts the food away.

“I am very fond of cheese-I like the reddish one, and I am also very fond of vegetables, I love all vegetables, particularly carrots.

“My favourite meal each day is prunes –I have them every morning."
