PLANS to create a wild flower ‘corridor’ from Cwmbran to Blaenavon, and identify other areas suitable for wild flower seeding, are among Torfaen council’s proposals to help bees and other pollinators thrive.
There will also be a review into how grassland is managed across Torfaen, with areas that are not being used for activities cut less frequently to encourage the growth of flowering plants.
Developers will be encouraged to make provision for pollinating insects in proposals for new housing and industrial sites.
Council leader Bob Wellington said: “Bees and other insects are essential to the food chain and without them we would not be able to grow food to eat. These proposals will help to increase the population of pollinating insects and in turn improve the wider environment.” The council is also investigating external funding opportunities, such as private sponsorship, to allow other pollinator-friendly activities to be carried out.
