NEWPORT council has said it acted immediately to ensure residents' safety after a car crashed into a bridge in Bettws.
A spokeswoman for the city council said they were first alerted to the incident at 2.10pm on Friday afternoon, around 18 hours after the crash happened, and acted "immediately".
"As soon as the council was notified it sent its instant response team to the bridge to assess the situation," she said.
"A structural engineer will also assess the damage that has been caused. Temporary guard fencing will be erected to protect the area and make it safe."
A 22-year-old man was taken to hospital “with a significant injury” after the silver VW Golf drove into the bridge wall, which crosses a stream, at 8.50pm on Thursday night.
