ONE of Newport’s most iconic landmarks has been awarded by online ratings site, TripAdvisor.

Newport Transporter Bridge has received a 2014 Certificate of Excellence. This award recognises businesses that consistently earn top ratings from TripAdvisor Travellers.

Councillor Mark Whitcutt, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “This is fantastic news. Visitors from all over the world come to see the Transporter Bridge and they clearly enjoy the experience.”

Newport Transporter Bridge, opened in 1906, is one of only six operational transporter bridges left in the world. The visitor centre is operated by the Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge.

The bridge is ranked second of Newport’s attractions on the website, losing out on the top spot to the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon.

It opens from Wednesday to Sunday between April and the end of September including bank holidays. Last admission is at 4pm and the last ferry crossing from west to east is at 4.30pm.

Prices are £2.75 for an adult day visitor, £1.75 for a child, including access to the high level walk way and motor house platform as well as unlimited crossings on the day.
