MORE than 500 senior citizens were treated to a free concert in Newport, staged by the city’s Rotary Club.

Sponsored by Newport City Homes, the concert was held at the Christchurch Centre in Malpas.

The entertainment featured a male voice choir, a brass band, and a folk group.

Gwent Police Choir set the scene with a version of Do You Hear The People Sing? from Les Miserables, and arrangements of The Lord’s Prayer and Alexander’s Ragtime Band followed, along with other well known numbers.

The Charwae Teg Folk Group features youngsters from across South Wales whose talents on strings, pipes and drums, delivered jigs, marches and other more soothing pieces.

The Rogerstone Band played a variety of marches, folk song arrangements and themes from the classics.

The band ended the concert with Speed Your Journey, a chorus from Verdi’s opera Nabucco.

In attendance were Mayor of Newport councillor Matthew Evans, the Mayoress Tina Hatton-Evans, Police and Crime Commissioner Ian Johnston and Newport East MP Jessica Morden.
