JUST six months ago, 18-year-old Ricky Bailey was in a coma fighting for his life but this Saturday he will cycle from Caldicot to Newport to raise funds for the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

Having suffered a brain haemorrhage after he says he was attacked in Cardiff on November 2 last year, Mr Bailey has faced a challenging rehabilitation including having to learn to walk again.

More than nine months on from the attack he is still on medication and continues to receive specialist treatment at Rookwood Hospital and doctors estimate that the full extent of his recovery from the injuries he sustained is unlikely to be known until February 2016.

But the bold teen will now take to his bike joined by brother Rob and two friends to raise cash for the hospital where he was treated.

Gathering outside The Haywain pub in Caldicot, at 11.30am, the group will ride via Magor and aim to arrive outside Rodney Parade, between 1pm to 1.30pm.

The charity bike ride has so far raised more than £600 with Mr Bailey hoping that the figure will be boosted to more than £1,000 by bucket donations from fans and well-wishers attending the match at Rodney Parade between Newport County and Wycombe Wanderers.

Mr Bailey and his family have been invited to watch the opening match of the season by the club with a half-time announcement planned to raise awareness of his campaign.

Mr Bailey’s mum, Alison, who will travel behind the cyclists with husband Gary and granddaughter Alison said: “Ricky has been recovering as well as can be expected.”
