THE inquest into the death of Matthew Williams - the man at the centre of the probe into the murder of 22-year-old Cerys Yemm - was opened today.

The inquest was opened and adjourned at Newport Civic Centre this morning, with his cause of death said to be 'unascertained' following a post mortem examination carried out at the University Hospital of Wales.

It was said that the 34-year-old was arrested at the Sirhowy Arms hostel in Argoed, where he had been living, at 1.23am on November 6, but subsequently became unresponsive.

Further toxicological and other tests are to be carried out on his body.

Miss Yemm was found dead at the Sirhowy Arms.

An inquest into her death held last month found that she had died as a result of “sharp force trauma to the face and neck”.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission, is investigating the case as police officers discharged a taser at Williams.

Detective Chief Superintendent for Gwent Police William Davies, who is the senior investigating officer, told the inquest of Miss Yemm that she was found on the floor of one of the rooms at the Sirhowy Arms with a man identified as Mr Williams, who was arrested but died a short time later.

The inquest into Williams' death was adjourned until April 3, 2015.
