If you had to be stuck in a lift with someone, who would it be and why?

The beautiful woman in my life, my wife Ann. We celebrated our 45th anniversary recently, so we’re well used to each other.

What is your biggest fear?

My grandchildren getting hurt.

Do you have any superstitions?

Not superstitions as such, but I never answer back to the wife. I think that’s more to do with survival, really.

If you could have only one song on your iPod, what would it be and why?

That’s a tough one. It’s between Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode and Bryan Adams – Summer of '69. I think I’ll go for Summer of '69 as that was the year that we got married.

What’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought not including property?

There’s not really a specific thing, so probably our holidays to see our daughter in Australia. She's been there 17 years and we go twice a year.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

My father told me never to take a hospital pass. He wanted me to do what I wanted to do and to not listen to others.

What’s your indulgence?

Good quality red wine.

What item could you not live without?

There are things that I wish were not around, such as laptops and phones, as I feel they are intrusive. Instead of the car, I would prefer to walk but I’d probably go for a corkscrew as something I could not live without.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?

I’d love to be 40 years younger. I enjoyed every mistake I made back then and would do it all again. I’ve got no regrets.

Where are you next going on holiday?

We’re going to Adelaide in Australia on December 29 to visit our daughter and our three grandchildren.
