SHOPPERS are being encouraged to back their independent traders at today's Shop Local Saturday event in Newport.

Newport enthusiasts group Newport Rises, in association with Pinnacle Letting Agents, are encouraging shoppers to spend £10 in small businesses today instead of big chains.

Special offers and promotions will be available throughout the day including a chance to win a Christmas meat hamper worth more than £100 at AD Turners when you spend more than £10.

A festive market will also be held on Commercial Street and Bridge Street.

Rogerstone councillor Chris Evans, founding member of Newport Rises, said: “Newport Rises is about people working together regardless of their politics for the good of our city.

"It is going to be a great opportunity to support our independent traders, there’s so much to see and do and lots of promotions and offers from our indie traders.”

Rogerstone Primary School Choir will perform from noon as Santa arrives and the Mayor of Newport, is also expected to attend to officially support the traders and open the day.

Liberal Democrat prospective candidate Paul Halliday, who will be running against Jessica Morden MP in Newport East next year, secured sponsorship from Pinnacle Letting Agents.

The initiative, now in its second year, aims to encourage people to support their communities by buying from local businesses.
