A POLICING team in Newport has repaired and re-installed an out-of-use CCTV camera in response to residents’ complaints over antisocial behaviour.

People living in Cromwell Road, Lliswerry, were reporting gangs of up to 30 young people hanging around, letting off fireworks, damaging fences and property and shouting insults.

The Alway Neighbourhood Policing Team, which covers Alway, Ringland and Lliswerry, noticed an escalation of antisocial behaviour in the area.

Insp Kevin Warren, of the Alway team, said police funds for new CCTV cameras were scarce but thanks to funding from Newport councillors Allan Morris and Ken Critchley, an old out-of-use CCTV camera was repaired.

The refurbished camera was then installed to the area, leading to a drop in antisocial behaviour calls from 32 in September to seven last month.

Inspector Warren said: “The figures illustrate we are making real progress and I’d like to thank the local councillors and partner agencies who have worked with us to improve this issue.”

“We know that anti-social behaviour and criminal damage remains a concern for people living in the Alway area and we will continue to work hard to help tackle this.”

Cllr Morris added: “As always, I was delighted to be able to help officers and local residents to combat anti-social behaviour. We will continue to make sure that those people who are causing antisocial behaviour in our communities have the most to fear.”
