NEWPORT pupils donated hundreds of pounds worth of food to Newport food bank.

Pupils at St Julian’s School raised £500 to buy essential food supplies for the organisation, which gives food to hundreds of people in crisis, after they decided to help out a local charity.

Last month the school held their annual fundraising events for Children in Need and after the students from Year 7 to Year 13 set some aside to put back into their local community.

Assistant to the head teacher, Ryan Owen said: “We listened to the pupils as to what to do with the money.

“The food bank helps out a large number of people in Newport and I think that is why they chose this charity.

“The post 16 pupils took the money and went shopping at Sainsbury’s and bought bags of basic essentials, tinned food and that sort of thing. We helped out as much as we could,” he said.

On Thursday afternoon volunteers from Newport food bank went to the school to be presented with the supplies.

Newport foodbank manager Martin Hall said: “It is fantastic that the staff and pupils would do that for our organisation.”
