NEWPORT County players brought some Christmas cheer to the children at the Royal Gwent Hospital when they visited today.

Around 24 County players visited three wards at the Royal Gwent Hospital yesterday afternoon to surprise children and parents alike.

Teaming up with ASDA Pillgwenlly as part of their ‘making people smile’ campaign players handed out selection boxes, goodie bags and toys to children on the Bluebell, Sapphire and Emerald wards.

Phil Wise who’s son Adam Wise, five, from Blackwood was visited by players said the visit brought festive cheer to the hospital.

“I think he is a bit overwhelmed,” Mr Wise said.

“It’s very nice for the kids.”

Mum Gemma Richards whose son Ethan Richards, seven, was visited by players agreed.

“I want expecting it,” she said.

“It’ nice to see the players and he seems really happy.

“It’s something different and makes a difference to kids who are in hospital over Christmas.”

Players visited each child on the ward, spending a few minutes chatting to them and their families, before posing for pictures and handing out their gifts.

Midfielder Lee Minshull said he enjoyed the visit and said it was nice to come down and make kids days.

Midfielder Mark Byrne agreed saying he liked coming to the hospital to give out gifts to the children.

“It’s good to put a smile on kids faces,” he said.
