“SUN is shinin' in the sky, there ain't a cloud in sight..”. This was certainly the case in Monmouth when local tribute band ELO Again rocked the Blake Theatre in a barnstorming concert in aid of St Anne’s Hospice. We were treated to some classic songs including “Don’t Bring Me Down”, “Telephone Line” and, of course, “Mr Blue Sky”, topped off with a moving electric violin rendition of “Mae Hen Wlad fy Nhadau”.

The sun certainly wasn’t shining during the much anticipated solar eclipse which coincided with the now notorious decision to refuse filming of the new James Bond film “Spectre” in the Assembly chamber.

For many people this was simply the last straw, coming hot on the heels of confirmation of a £10,000 pay rise for AMs and yet more rumours of an increase in the number of AMs. Let’s focus on raising the profile of Wales on the world stage.

There was at least some good news for commuters with the pre-election announcement that Severn bridge tolls are finally set to fall with the abolition of the VAT. In an ideal world there wouldn’t be any tolls aside from ensuring funding for essential maintenance, particularly in the case of the original bridge which is suffering from corrosion.

The proposed reduction is a step in the right direction as is the long-awaited upgrade of Llandegfedd Reservoir. I’m looking forward to attending the forthcoming opening of the reservoir’s new visitor centre. The reservoir is a cherished local landmark that is entering an exciting new phase of its life. The designs for the new visitor centre look great, I’m sure it will be a hit with local people and tourists alike.

Sadly, another cherished local landmark, Llanyrafon House, hasn’t fared so well - demolished to make way for a new housing estate. This fine Victorian residence was once the setting for the Stirrup Cup Country Club and more recently part of Cwmbran’s Commodore Hotel. It’s deeply ironic that its demise coincides with the introduction of the Welsh Government’s Historic Environment Bill.

I’m pleased Monmouthshire continues to look outwards to the wider world with the council’s Commonwealth Day “raising the flag” event and a well-attended Love Zimbabwe event at Abergavenny Castle. These volunteers put in a lot of work and help put our county and Wales on the map. Let’s do all we can to keep it “All over the World”.
