A STABBING victim remains in a "stable condition" in hospital following an incident in Llanhilleth yesterday, police said today.

The 40-year-old suffered knife injuries to his shoulder and cheek following an incident in the High Street in Llanhilleth, Aberbeeg, at around 3.45pm.

Police said his injuries were not life threatening.

A 38-year-old man from the Llanhilleth area arrested on suspicion of a section 18 assault remains in custody today.

A police spokesman said this morning: "Gwent Police were called to an incident in Llanhilleth, Abertillery at approximately 3.45pm yesterday.

"Officers attended and found a 40-year-old man who had suffered knife injuries to his shoulder and cheek.

"The man was taken by ambulance to Royal Gwent Hospital where his condition is described as not life threatening. He remains in a stable condition.

"Following the incident a 38-year-old man from the Llanhilleth area was arrested on suspicion of a section 18 assault. He remains in custody at this time assisting officers with their enquiries."

A 39-year-old man was taken to hospital after suffering from stab wounds, a Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman has confirmed.

The man was taken to Nevill Hospital with shoulder and facial injuries.

Paramedics had been called to an address at High Street in Llanhilleth at around 3.40pm.

One ambulance and a rapid response vehicle attended the scene.

Local residents said there was an alleged stabbing and that one person was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Around 20 armed police and a sniffer dog were at the scene, before they moved on around 6pm to continue investigating the incident.

Police have been responding to an incident in Aberbeeg. Several police cars were at the scene next to Glandwr Industrial Estate. Riot police were said to be among them. A sergeant said: "We are looking for someone to assist with our inquiries".
