ST John Cymru Wales has named Croesyceiliog Comprehensive School as its School of the Year for 2006, for equipping the most young people with lifesaving skills in Wales.

The school trained 226 young people to have the ability to save a life in 2006 as part of the Young Lifesavers Scheme, which aims to teach all pupils vital First Aid skills."

Sarah Thomas, Schools Development Officer St John Cymru Wales said: "Using basic emergency aid procedures as merely an example of a suitable learning skill under the development of practical skills necessary for everyday life undermines the importance of learning First Aid."

Every year in the UK, around two million children are taken to hospital as a result of accidents.

In an emergency situation, every second counts. Many lives could be saved if there was a First-aider in every home.

Keith Dunn, Chief Executive St John Cymru Wales, said: "The achievement of Croesyceiliog School highlights the value of the Scheme and the importance of keeping First Aid as part of the National Curriculum."

In recognition of their commitment to First Aid, St John Wales presented the school with a trophy, and £150 worth of vouchers to spend in the St John Wales Training or Supplies department, at a ceremony at the school yesterday.
