Energetic members of the Abergavenny Beaver pack ran up and down 200 steps at the Town Hall recently to achieve their goal of gaining another challenge badge.

The object originally was to climb 100 steps to mark the centenary of scouting, said Beaver leader Samantha Dodd, but it turned out there were a total of 200 steps in the building.

The experience was arranged by Bernard Zavishlock, a volunteer in the Borough Theatre, and the youngsters were treated to a reception by the deputy mayor and mayoress, Cllr and Mrs Graham Preece, who are pictured here with Bernard and Samantha.

The group enjoyed a visit by a very special dog - Merlin the 18-month old Border collie who belongs to the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team and has helped to locate and rescue three people since he started working.

The Beavers hid in Bailey Park and Merlin was sent to find them, a task they all enjoyed enormously.
