A FORMER Dr Who star has been added to the impressive line up of celebrities at Newport’s first comic con event next month.

Organisers of Newport’s GeekedFest, event managing director Shane Jordan, 30, and Chris Muscat, 28, have announced that legendary Dr Who star John Levene (real name John Anthony Woods), who played the original Dr Who will attend the convention.

The event, which will be held at the Newport Centre on August 8 and 9, aims to give comic con fans the opportunity to meet their favourite stars, see exhibitions; interactive displays and listen to question and answer sessions.

“My mates and I had sat around and complained how there was nothing to do in Newport and we decided to do something about it," Mr Jordan told the Argus earlier this year.

“I believe this event can be massive for Newport as a city and will help with rebuilding public image and regenerations."

The announcement is the last in the star–studded line-up, which will allow fans to meet the likes of Ross Mullen, who played the white walker in Game of Thrones, and John Challis, better known as Boycey from Only Fools and Horses.

Dr Who writer James Moran will also appear and three American wrestlers.

Mr Jordan, who runs Sin City Comics in Cwmbran, said: “The more tickets we sell, the more celebrities we can bring in. There’s a real buzz about it all.”

John Levene was a cyberman in the 1968 "Doctor Who" adventure 'The Invasion', but director Douglas Camfield gave him the role of Corporal Benton when the actor originally cast in the part was sacked.

This was to become his best known role and he played the part of Benton regularly in the series until 1975, when he was written out. In 1977 Levene quit acting and in the 1980s he moved to the USA.

Tickets, from £10, are available from Sin City Comics or geekedfest.com. For more details call Shane on 075 77711143.
