A DISABLED pensioner was banned from her local social club after a row about using her mobility scooter inside.

Anita Jayne, 60, from Swffryd is in dispute in Swffryd Social Club, who told her she was only allowed in using a non-motorised wheelchair.

Ms Jayne has since been barred from the club after officials claim she has been harassing club members - a claim she strongly denies.

But Ms Jayne, who suffers with leg problems and finds it difficult to walk, says: "I used to come to this club quite a lot when my partner Gwillam was alive.

"He died two years ago now and it is only recently that I have started going in there again.

"But last week I went in on my scooter and they told me I couldn't bring it in the pub because it is motorised.

"I don't have another wheelchair because I gave it in when I got my scooter.

"I should be allowed to use it, I'm not hurting anyone."

Club treasurer Martin Brown said they have spent thousands of pounds adapting the club to accommodate disabled people by putting in disabled toilets and ramps and say they are not discriminating against anyone.

"Under Club and Institute Union rules, of which we are a member, motorised scooters are not permitted into any club. They are classed as vehicles," he explained.

"If they are used on the roads, as this one is, it is not safe to allow it inside our premises.

"We have a duty to protect our able bodied members and we have tried to explain this to Anita. If she came in with a normal wheelchair there would have been no problem."

Mr Brown confirmed that as of Thursday, Ms Jayne has been banned from the club for harrassment, which she denies.

"She has been banned because she has been harassing the committee about her situation," he added.

"Even though she is not a member, the club have decided to have a meeting and discuss this problems this week."
