A DOG has been found abandoned on a Newport street in an “appalling” condition.

The male Dogue de Bordeaux was found by distressed residents on Capel Crescent in Pill on Saturday morning and police were called.

Officers took the emaciated canine to Summerhill Veterinary Centre, where he is now receiving treatment.

The centre said the dog – which was found near piles of rubbish with visible damage and infections to his skin – is now being treated with intravenous antibiotics. He is said to be in a comfortable state.

Several offers for donations have already been made to help with his care and treatment.

A post on the Pill Pulse community Facebook page read: “People were openly crying at the state of this poor lad. He didn't get like that overnight, so someone left him to suffer appallingly before discarding him like an old shoe.

“Even though he was obviously in a lot of pain, and hungry he was still very trusting to the people who were helping him.”

Another witness said people were “very distressed” by what they saw, and called it an “upsetting” incident.

The RSCPA have been informed. If anyone can help the police to locate the owner of this dog, call Gwent Police on 101.
