A 15-year-old boy suffered a broken leg in a hit-and-run in Gwent.

Cwmcarn High School pupil Rhys Taylor, from Abercarn, was hit by a car at 11.30pm on Friday as he crossed a road in Cross Keys after a night out with friends.

The incident happened at the corner of Gladstone Street and Risca Road, known locally as the Cross Keys Corner. The driver of the vehicle drove off without stopping.

Rhys' friend Tom Saunders, 15, helped him to the nearby Balti-Nite Restaurant where his dad Michael Taylor was spending the evening.

Staff at the restaurant called the victim's mother Joanne Taylor and the police. Mrs Taylor went to Cross Keys from their home in Coed Celynen, Abercarn.

Police were at the scene as she arrived but as an ambulance had yet to turn up, she drove him herself to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, where he was discovered to have suffered a broken and dislocated ankle.

Mother-of-two Mrs Taylor said: "To not even stop to have seen if he was ok is terrible.

"Thank god he only had a broken ankle, which is bad enough. It could have been so much worse."

Rhys returned to school yesterday on crutches and with his leg in plaster.

"I don't remember a thing of what happened," he said.

"It all happened so fast, it was a blur. I'm really aching today though and it's difficult getting around on crutches."

A witness to the incident described the car that left the scene of the accident as a maroon-coloured Rover.

A spokesman for Gwent Police confirmed that the incident is a hit-and-run and are appealing for more information.
