A HOUSE in Newport has been boarded up for three months after police officers acted on what they called “extreme” anti-social behaviour and criminal activity.

Newport Magistrates' Court heard evidence last Thursday relating to a Charter Housing property in Temple Street, Pill. It had been linked to the supply of Class A drugs and residents have reported the related anti-social behaviour in the area, police said.

Two drugs warrants had been carried out at the property this year and on each occasion, drugs were found.

Officers said reports include visitors coming and going to the address and a number of vehicles parking in the street outside the resident’s house while they collect their drugs; and vehicles beeping their horns and shouting to the tenant keeping neighbouring residents awake.

Strong smells of cannabis have also been reported coming from the address. Residents have experienced verbal abuse and have said the harassment and abuse they have faced has left them “too scared to leave their homes”, police added.

The house has now been closed off for three months as a result.

PC Leanne Pole said: “We have worked closely with Charter Housing and the tenant to try and reduce the anti-social behaviour over the last few months, however the situation has not improved.

“These local residents have had to deal with a great deal of anti-social behaviour and hopefully this closure will bring them some respite.

“We want to make it clear to the community that we will act on information they give to us about issues that affect their quality of life and give them the support they deserve."

A spokesman for Charter Housing added: "We work closely with the police, and other partner agencies. As a result of this action, possession proceedings have now begun against the resident of the property.

“We hope that the joint working between Charter Housing and the police will give victims of anti-social behaviour confidence to report incidents in the future."
