AN ANONYMOUS donor has given £20,000 to help a mother who was denied access to a life-extending form of cancer drugs, and is collecting money to fund it herself.

Mother-of-two Carolyn Davies, 47, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2014 and was prescribed Herceptin after treatment to try and prevent the cancer from spreading.

But last May, a biopsy showed she had developed a secondary form of the disease.

Her oncologist recommended that she apply for funding for Trastuzumab Emtansine TDM1, but she was denied on the grounds that she had not tried alternative treatment.

Last week, she was again denied access to the drugs that could prolong her life for a second time.

She has been fundraising to pay for the drugs herself – which could cost around £69,000 – and she was “overwhelmed” when an anonymous member of her church donated £20,000.

Meanwhile, inspired by his own mother’s fight against Hodkins Lymphoma, six-year-old Harvey Hiscocks wanted to raise funds for Mrs Davies – a colleague of his mum, Aimee Hiscocks.

Last Sunday, he rode 15 miles from Langstone and Caldicot, accompanied by his mum, who is now in remission.

Ms Hiscocks said: “He was so determined that he didn’t stop once. I’m so proud of him.”

For their efforts, so far the pair have raised over £650.

She added that the anonymous donation was a “pure act of human kindness” which she said Mrs Davies deserves, as she is a “lovely woman”.

Cwmbran fundraisers Deri Groves, 50, and his wife Michelle have been busy raising funds for their neighbour by organising a range of events from a raffle to a fun day, and look to have raised more than £6,000.

Commenting on the anonymous donation, Mr Groves said everyone was “in shock” when they heard, but it has given the group a “boost”.

He added: “The donation is amazing. But it has made us more determined than ever to raise the full amount.”

Mrs Groves has been supported by her employer Nationwide, and in the Newport branch next Tuesday, August 25, they will be selling cakes and holding a raffle.

A spokesman from Aneurin Bevan UHB said: “To ensure appropriate use of NHS funds, a wide range of clinical evidence is sought to ensure that the treatment being requested is the right treatment for the patient.”
