AN inquest was opened and adjourned today into the death of a pensioner who was seriously injured in a road accident in Newport in August.

75-year-old David Melvin Evans died at the Royal Gwent Hospital on September 3 this year, less than a month after he had been involved in the collision on Bryn Bevan in Brynglas which occurred at around 11.36pm on August 10.

Today his inquest was opened by the coroner for Gwent, David Bowen.

Gwent Police coroner officer, Detective Constable Jon Lewis said: : “A post mortem was carried out on his body on September 8 by Dr James Harrison who gave the cause of death as 1a) bronchial pneumonia and 1b) multiple injuries arising from the road traffic accident.”

He said Mr Evans was identified by members of his family.

He added: “Police inquiries are continuing into the consequences of the death.”

Coroner Mr Bowen said: “I’m satisfied with the evidence I have heard and I propose to adjourn this case for three months.”

Both the ambulance service and police were called to the scene at the time of the accident. The road was closed for around four hours while collision experts investigated.

Police arrested a 34-year-old driver on suspicion of dangerous driving. He is on police bail until October 19.
