A NEWBRIDGE artist’s live painting of football legend Paul Gascoigne sold for £1,000 at an auction in Leeds.

Patrick Killian, 41, readied his canvas and brushes at a Night with Gazza event at City Varieties Music Hall on Thursday night.

The artist, who has previously done live paintings of boxing legends Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson, painted the former England star as he spoke live on stage.

The painting captures one of Mr Gascoigne’s most famous moments, when he saluted the England support after they were defeated on penalties by West Germany in the 1990 World Cup.

Around 500 people were present as the 48-year-old spoke about the trials and tribulations of his eventful life, even referencing his court appearance in Newcastle earlier that day.

Although the painting was only 90 per cent finished by the time the Geordie superstar finished speaking, it was sold for £1,000 at an auction held after the event.

Speaking about the painting and the photo it was based on, Mr Killian said: “It was on the flier to advertise the event and he’s well known for that image. A lot of people remember that time.

“The actual auctioneer was bigging me up in the beginning and at the interval. He was getting the crowd applauding me and cheering so that’s nice

“I had never met Gazza before, so it was nice to meet up with him and shake his hand."
